![[1of3] At its core, anxiety involves excessive worry about a potential threat or negative outcome. When we are anxious, we have successfully convinced ourselves that some future event will end negatively.
As a result, we often try to reduce our anxieties by avoiding specific situations or interactions that will trigger said fears. While we may receive temporary satisfaction through avoidance, we must not convince ourselves that this method will cause the issue itself to fizzle out and disappear.
This is especially true in interpersonal relationships. When we have specific anxieties (such as fears of abandonment), [which are often] triggered by previous experiences, we may find ourselves in an ever-present cycle of avoidance. We avoid conflicts, debates, and topics that may lead to a rupture in our relationship. This cycle often continues subconsciously. Ultimately, we restrict ourselves from growing as individuals and within our relationships because we believe the key to success in our relations is accomplished through pleasing and peacekeeping. <There’s more....>

![[2of3] The first key to addressing the cycle is raising our awareness about the things we are avoiding and being honest about how these anxieties influence how we show up in the world and interact with others.
If we are honest in our reflections, we may find that the relief from avoidance is short-lived because the issues are still present. We also still have uncomfortable feelings about our inability to confront our concerns in the moment. As such, we may pull away from subsequent interactions or choose to sever connections altogether to avoid these negative feelings of inadequacy. Now, we find ourselves contributing to the very outcome we feared would occur on its own. A lost connection.
And the cycle continues.
Avoidance gives an illusion of peace. On this journey to finding relief... Maybe try vocalizing your unmet needs as an alternative way to cope. Working through your issues via communication can help release you from the inner conflict that comes with avoidance and addresses the issues with those whom we need/ love. As a result, we grow as individuals, and our relationships grow through sharing how we would like to be cared for moving forward. It may be challenging initially, and as with any new skill, we may fumble our way through. That’s ok!! We must learn to be patient with ourselves. Just think, this is a new method for us and it involves leaning into our anxieties vs. running away from them.
However, it’s not lost on us that in order for us to experience something new in our lives.. we may have to do things differently for a change. TAKE THE CHANCE.

Self-love, often used interchangeably with self-care, is the idea that we should hold ourselves in high regard in our efforts to reach lasting and sustainable happiness.

I offer you a few suggestions to be mindful of while on your journey.
-At first glance, the steps seem intuitive and straightforward. However, we often skip over some of these steps, for one reason or another, and find that our growth and goals fall short.
-Be patient with yourself and use the world and your connections with intentionality to advance your cause. Most of all, give yourself credit for the gains and extend grace toward yourself when you fall short.
